Have your say - Digitalising travel documents
You can also get involved in forming EU laws. The European Commission would like to hear your views on laws and policies currently in development. They offer a platform "Have your say" with the list of all new EU initiatives open for public consultation. Travel – digitalising travel documents to make travelling easier
About this initiative: Digital travel documents can be easier to issue than physical ones. This initiative aims to decide on a common format for digital travel documents and to make travelling easier.
Feedback period: for stage 2 it is 08 September 2022 - 06 October 2022
Feedback from Europeans for Safe Connections
We "Europeans for Safe Connections" are very concerned with this initiative.
It is crucial that analogue documents stay in the system parallel to digital ones.
Digital systems are not error-free and cannot be relied on 100%. With digital documents, there is a rising risk of cybercrime via data leak, theft, resale and misuse. In case of cybercrime you never know exactly into whose hands your data will fall and what will happen to the documents/data. Digital solutions consume more and more electricity which is a huge society problem at the moment. And digital solutions means use of wireless technology and more exposure to electromagnectic radiation RF EMF
Biometric data: The EU suggest that some of the solutions could be the use of biometric data such as fingerprint or facial scanning for accurate identification in a matter of seconds. EU must respect personal biometric data and not ask for it to be mandatory. In proposal 20 in our ECI we ask the EU to protect citizens against the increasing vulnerability to cybercrime by applying the principle of data minimization to collection via wireless.

Since the introduction of Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) Enabled Passports, the system have been plagued with various vulnerability issues that prove to compromise the E-passport security.

Energy supply: In the present situation with problematic energy supply, it is vital to maintain the use of analogue documents. In a situation where energy supplies fail and digital solutions cannot be accessed, serious life-threatening situations can arise. If digital solutions are to be used, we recommend reducing the massive electricity consumption caused by digital communication technology, e.g. by prioritizing wired solutions and low energy solutions. Please read our proposal 12.

RF EMF exposure: Digital travelling documents mean digital scanners to read them and this mean more radiofrequency exposure to citizens. Electro sensitive citizens will therefore be forced to be exposed to more radiation that will make them even more sick. Among the EU's values is that minorities are respected. Electro Sensitive people are a minority and the EU should respect their wish not to be exposed to RF EMF. In our proposal 1 we ask the EU to enact RF EMF exposure limits based on all health and biological effects, not only those related to temperature, to protect humans – above all children, pregnant women, patients, the elderly, the infirm, electrohypersensitive people (EHS), those injured by this radiation and those using electromedical devices or implants; apply the precautionary principle.

Our second feedback
We "Europeans for Safe Connections" are very concerned with this initiative. It is crucial that physical / analogue documents stay in the system parallel to digital ones. Digital systems are not error-free and cannot be relied on 100%. Sometimes it’s the citizens fault, sometimes it’s the system's fault.
Moreover, digital documents mean digital scanners to read them and this mean more radiofrequency exposure to citizens that do not want to be exposed. In the proposal 9 of our ECI we ask: "In order to protect human health and bio-integrity, ask EU citizens for informed consent before exposing them to RF EMF."
https://signstop5g.eu/en/solutions/protection-of-all-life-on-earth/proposal-9
This means that a citizen will not be exposed to radiation from a device or infrastructure for wireless scanning of digital documents until informed of the type of radiation and given the option of having the documents scanned in another way:
- further from citizen's body
- with the cabled scanner
- use of physical documents
Among the EU's values is that minorities are respected. Electro Sensitive people are a minority and the EU should respect their wish not to be exposed to RF EMF. This includes radio frequency scanners, but also transport without Wi-Fi services.
Moreover in the present situation with problematic energy supply it is vital to maintain the use of physical documents. In a situation where energy supplies fail and digital solutions cannot be accessed, serious life-threatening situations can arise.
EU legislation must respect and include citizens who do not want to use digital solutions in their daily lives.
Also, the EU should respect the personal ownership of biometric data and not mandate their availability. Once, only criminals gave their fingerprints. Soon we will all give our fingerprints and other biometric information. This mentally leads to a shift from the society where everyone is innocent until proven guilty to the society where you have to prove your innocence.
After all, with digital documents, you never know exactly into whose hands they will fall and what will happen to the documents/data.
